Kohima: The Western Angami Public Organisation (WAPO) issued an open appeal on July 27 demanding immediate road repairs on National Highway-29. Organization president Theyievilie Suohumvü and general secretary Kezhaselie K. Kuotsu identified four high-risk zones currently plagued by potholes, cracks, and active ground sinking. The damage spans Kezanu, near the old KMC dumping site, Liezocha, the Bypass Petrol Pump area, and the landslide-hit stretch at Melierü near Dzüdza village.
Relentless rainfall over several months triggered the destruction. These routes serve as the primary lifeline between Dimapur and Kohima. The road is failing. Motorists face massive hazards every day.
With monsoon conditions forecast to persist beyond October, WAPO warns that sections of the highway could become completely impassable. The group is pressuring the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd (NHIDCL) and the Nagaland Public Works Department (NPWD) to bolster infrastructure against further subsidence and commit to long-term maintenance. WAPO stated it hoped the authorities would respond promptly to safeguard public safety and maintain connectivity. However, the group cautioned that if officials ignore these repairs, the organization "may be compelled to initiate appropriate action in the interest of public safety and welfare."
