Landslides Cut Off Lifeline Road in Wokha District

Kohima: Persistent monsoon rains hammered Wokha district on July 30, triggering multiple landslides that severed key transit routes. The Wokha-Merapani road took the hardest hit. This route acts as a vital artery connecting the district headquarters to the Sanis and Bhandari subdivisions.

A major slide hit Sanis 0 Point during the early hours of Thursday. Massive stone boulders and thick debris dumped onto the road, trapping vehicles in their tracks. Frustrated commuters resorted to moving rocks by hand. They cleared just enough space for two-wheelers to scrape through. Larger vehicles had no such luck.

Another mudslide struck between Chüdi and Longtsüng villages in Sanis Subdivision. This blockage halted all vehicular traffic in the area. The storm also brought down two electric poles. Constant soil erosion beneath the road makes this stretch notoriously dangerous during the monsoon season. Authorities fear that prolonged closures could leave several villages cut off from essential supplies and emergency services.

Restoration teams are now on the ground. Work is moving forward under the direct supervision of the Additional Deputy Commissioner of Sanis. Officials issued a warning for anyone planning to drive through the region. According to reports from the LMRPO, "Restoration works are currently underway under the supervision of the Additional Deputy Commissioner, Sanis, to restore normal connectivity at the earliest." Travelers should remain alert until clearance operations finish.
