Kohima: Continuous monsoon rains since July 19 have battered Mokokchung District. Multiple landslides and flash floods severed vital road links and damaged infrastructure. The Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) is tracking cleanup efforts across the district. Crews deployed heavy machinery, including excavators and JCBs, to clear debris and stabilize slopes.
Work continues on the ground. Several routes now handle Light Motor Vehicles, including the Japukong Range Road, the Longtho-Japu-Mangkolemba Road, and the Milak Bridge-Khar-Mongchen-Mangkolemba Road. Progress remains steady elsewhere.
The road to Salulemang village remains cut off since the initial July 19 deluge. Officials inspected the site on August 2 and expect another week of work. The 6.2-km stretch between Aosenden and Aosungkum villages also remains blocked. DDMA teams monitored clearance operations there on August 2. Teams also visited Anaki C on July 30 and the NH-702 section at Merangkong on July 28 to coordinate repairs.
Access to Wameken village and the Unger Road lifeline are still under repair following the July 19 failures. The Jangpetkong Range Road is the hardest hit. Roughly 43 kilometers of the corridor are impassable. Extensive subsidence plagues the 32 to 35 km stretch near Warumong, Yimjenkimong, and Molungkimong. A massive landslide at Yimjenkimong remains uninspected as crews struggle to reach the site. Officials hope to reopen the 31-32 km stretch near Warumong within four days.
District officials continue to monitor Tuli Sub-Division. The NSDMA is working alongside the District Administration and PWD (R&B) to speed up repairs. "Priority continues to be accorded to routes serving as lifelines for remote villages and to facilitating the uninterrupted movement of emergency services, relief operations and essential supplies," the NSDMA said. Officials urge residents to avoid unnecessary travel in landslide-prone zones during the heavy rains.
