Kohima: Persistent monsoon rains starting July 19 have battered Mokokchung District, triggering landslides and floods that shredded local infrastructure. The Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority is managing a massive cleanup effort. Crews are using excavators and JCBs to clear debris and stabilize unstable slopes.
Several routes now support Light Motor Vehicle traffic, including the Japukong Range Road, the Longtho to Mangkolemba stretch, and the road from Milak Bridge through Khar and Mongchen. While these arteries have reopened, other areas remain cut off.
The Jangpetkong Range Road remains the hardest hit. Roughly 43 kilometres of the route are blocked. Work continues on the 31 to 32 kilometre mark near Warumong. Officials expect to restore traffic to Warumong, Yimjenkimong, and Molungkimong within four days, weather permitting. A massive landslide at Yimjenkimong remains uninspected because heavy equipment cannot yet reach the site.
The road and bridge serving Salulemang village should be fixed in one week. Repair crews are also working on the 6.2-kilometre link between Aosenden and Aosungkum, the primary routes to Wameken and Unger villages, and sections of NH-702 at Merangkong. Officials completed assessments in Anaki C following damage to homes, farmland, and plantations.
The agency is coordinating with the District Administration and the PWD Mangkolemba division. "Priority continues to be accorded to routes serving as lifelines for remote villages and to facilitating the uninterrupted movement of emergency services, relief operations and essential supplies," the NSDMA stated. Authorities are urging the public to avoid unnecessary travel and watch for further landslide warnings.
