Kohima: Heavy monsoon rains triggered massive landslides across three major road stretches in Shamator, trapping travellers and cutting off essential transit routes. District authorities received reports on Sunday regarding damage that occurred overnight. The storm severed the National Highway connecting Shamator to Tuensang, the Shamator NAP Ward to Kiphire road, and the PMGSY route linking Shamator to the Chessore subdivision, which acts as a gateway to Aghunato in Zunheboto.
Richard Thong, District Project Assistant for the DDMA in Shamator, confirmed that cleanup crews from the Public Works Department National Highways wing are currently on the ground. Progress remains slow. The Shamator NAP Ward to Kiphire road suffered the worst damage and stays completely blocked. "The concerned authority had repaired the road last year also, but again it's gone. The road is completely cut off," Thong said.
Officials have confirmed zero deaths or injuries so far. While the DDMA has yet to receive word on destroyed homes, they warned that remote villages often face reporting delays. Authorities continue to monitor the area closely as recovery operations press forward.
