Kohima: The Shamator Town Public Forum (STPF) issued a demand on September 3 for the state government to fix two destroyed sections of NH-202. The road serves as the primary route for the region. Two specific sites near the NAP camp and Shungkiu Village remain completely unmotorable. The NAP stretch has been broken since 2024 and spans 200 to 300 metres. The Shungkiu section has been impassable since 2018, stretching between 400 and 500 metres.
Locals currently drive 10 to 20 km extra on risky detours. These alternate paths turn dangerous during the monsoon season. Medical emergencies are a major worry. Patients and the elderly face severe delays during transit. The STPF labeled the current state of the road unacceptable for the district. The group stated that the damage has placed the road "beyond ordinary repair," and they now require permanent reconstruction.
The forum called for immediate engineering fixes like slope stabilization, better drainage, and retaining structures. They want a firm, time-bound plan from officials. The STPF also asked the Yimkhiung Tribal Council to pressure the government on this issue. Residents expect a permanent solution rather than repeated temporary patches. The forum emphasized that connectivity to Kiphire and Pungro headquarters remains essential for trade, education, and health. They refuse to accept long-term isolation as a normal way of life.
