Manipur students and citizens demand justice following Khongban Sunurok killings

Imphal: Protests erupted across Manipur on October 22 to demand justice for three civilians killed during an attack at Khongban Sunurok on October 19. The victims were killed while gathering firewood in a community forest area, leaving three others injured. Public anger is boiling over.

The All India Students Federation (AISF) Manipur State Council led a rally toward the Bharatiya Janata Party office. Security personnel blocked their path near Kangla Gate, sparking a confrontation. Police detained several students as the situation intensified.

Protesters rejected official claims that the state is returning to normal. They pointed to the ongoing violence between indigenous Naga and Meitei communities as proof that the situation remains dire. One demonstrator slammed the government for its lack of urgency. "The government says peace is being restored. But how can it say this when indigenous Naga and Meitei people are being killed continuously? The government should stop spreading propaganda that peace has been restored," she said.

Another protester echoed this frustration while addressing the persistent cycle of violence. "How long will the people of the state have to endure such painful moments?" he asked. Demonstrators are now demanding that the state government hold the perpetrators accountable and take effective action to stop the violence once and for all.
