Imphal: Delhi Police detained opposition leaders on July 21 after they staged a protest near Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s residence. Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav were among those taken into custody. The demonstration, which included Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, demanded accountability for alleged NEET paper leaks and irregularities in competitive exams.
Union Minister of State Jitendra Singh and Home Secretary Govind Mohan failed to end the standoff. Police moved in once talks stalled. Manipur Congress leaders condemned the action as an assault on democracy. Party leader Keisham Meghachandra Singh stated: "Rahul Gandhi is the voice of India's youth, students, farmers, workers, and the marginalised."
By July 22, the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee took to the streets in Imphal. Former Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh led a march from Congress Bhawan to Lok Bhawan. They submitted a memorandum to Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla demanding the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. They also called for a parliamentary debate on exam leaks and the dropping of all FIRs against protesting students.
The BJP countered with its own protest. Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh slammed the opposition for disrupting the Monsoon Session of Parliament. He claimed the government remains ready for debate, but the Congress chose chaos over cooperation. He noted: "India's youth deserve solutions, certainty, and responsible leadership, not political theatrics."
BJP workers marched to Congress Bhavan in Imphal, carrying banners reading "Stop Sponsored Anarchy." BJP State Secretary K. Sharat accused Rahul Gandhi of trying to damage the Prime Minister’s international reputation. BJP spokesperson Thokchom Radheshyam joined the counter-protest, where supporters chanted slogans against the Congress party.
