Gangtok assessing massive damage following heavy rains and landslides

Gangtok: Gangtok authorities are scrambling to assess widespread wreckage after heavy rains triggered landslides and mudflows across the region. Officials launched a district-wide survey on Wednesday and Thursday to identify sites requiring urgent repairs. Kabi Tingda MLA Tshering T Bhutia led the inspection team, which included engineers from the Roads and Bridges Department, DDMA officials, revenue surveyors, and the Ranka Block Development Officer.

Teams are scouring Bojoghari, Lower Bojoghari, Lingding, High Court Road, TNA Gate, VIP Colony, Upper Z-Bojoghari, and the Pangthang-Lingdok Road. Other sites under review include Pamro Gaon, Ling Perbing, Upper and Middle Luing, Phenzong, Ranka, Rakdong Tintek, Daragaon Upper Burtuk, Sichey, and Arithang. Mud and debris currently block several roads, cutting off traffic. Inspectors are also checking residential homes for structural failures as the ground remains unstable.

Public infrastructure took a major hit. The Sewage Treatment Plant at Sichey sustained damage, and debris pile-ups near the Enchey School 33/11 kV Switching Station pose a serious risk. Workers have draped tarpaulins over slide zones to stop rainwater seepage. The District Collector and DDMA chairman ordered crews to clear roads and help displaced residents. Field teams continue to prioritize high-risk areas as the rain persists.

Officials issued a stern warning for citizens to stay safe. Residents must avoid travel through landslide zones and watch for warning signs. Authorities stated, "Those living near unstable slopes have been asked to report cracks, slope movement or falling debris to authorities immediately." Everyone should exercise extra caution at night while the recovery process continues.
