Kohima: Noklak officials are fighting to restore roads and help families after flash floods and landslides hammered the district. The District Administration and the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) kicked off an emergency response on July 22. They held a meeting to sync up inter-departmental efforts for immediate and long-term repairs. The DDMA JCB has been on the job since July 19.
Landslides keep hitting the area. Fresh damage to culverts and retaining walls has stalled progress. Workers cleared the Noklak-Panso route between July 22 and 24, but new slides quickly erased that work. Connectivity remains a major headache. The Lein Bridge on the Noklak-Tsuwao road snapped under flash floods, isolating nine villages in the Panso area. Crews are now working to patch that bridge and the surrounding road.
The situation is fluid. Fresh landslides blocked a seven-kilometre stretch at eight different spots on the Noklak-Lein Bridge road. Workers also cleared the Langnok-Noklak road, Panso-Yakor road, and the Pangsha shortcut. They cleared the Nokhu-Kingpao road to evacuate a sick patient and rescued two stranded families at Tempu. Repairs are also underway on foot overbridges between Kingpao-Aniashu and Noklak-Lengnyu, plus a culvert on the road to the District Hospital.
The authorities are focused on survival. They provided food, transport, and beds for 30 passengers trapped between Saddle and Noklak. The DDMA has requested extra relief supplies from the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority. Tarpaulins are already out to families, and officials have issued more than 50 SDRF assistance forms. The district administration stated: "They would continue to monitor the situation closely and undertake necessary relief, road clearance and restoration works to maintain essential connectivity and support affected communities."
