Kohima: Widespread landslides and flash floods have paralyzed travel across Noklak district. The District Administration and District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) are working to reopen key routes. Emergency efforts began in earnest after an July 22 meeting chaired by the deputy commissioner.
Roads are a mess. The Noklak-Panso route saw repairs between July 22 and July 24, but fresh mudslides hit the area again. A seven-kilometre stretch currently sits blocked at eight different locations. Officials are specifically pushing for the "early restoration of the Noklak-Chendang Saddle Road," which serves as a vital artery for the district headquarters.
Floodwaters hammered the Lein Bridge on the Noklak-Tsuwao road. That failure cut off nine villages in the Panso area. Meanwhile, crews cleared the Nokhu-Kingpao road to get a critically ill patient to help. They also rescued two stranded families at Tempu. A lone JCB has been grinding away at debris since July 19.
Workers have cleared the Langnok-Noklak, Panso-Yakor, and Pangsha shortcut roads. They also repaired foot overbridges between Kingpao-Aniashu and Noklak-Lengnyu, alongside a broken culvert at Danlepdong near the District Hospital. The administration provided food, beds, and rides for 30 passengers stuck between Saddle and Noklak.
The agency is handing out tarpaulins and has issued over 50 State Disaster Response Fund assistance forms. Teams are out in the field now, as officials vow to "closely monitor the situation" while they continue the heavy lifting of repairs.
