Kohima: Nagaland faces a deepening crisis after heavy rainfall triggered widespread landslides and flash floods. The Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) is pushing rescue and restoration across Longleng, Mon, Tuensang, and Mokokchung districts. Road networks remain fractured. Essential supplies are moving slowly as ground teams fight debris.
The Indian Air Force resumed humanitarian flights on Monday. Sorties had been grounded since July 26 due to foul weather. IAF helicopters transported 107 passengers and delivered 4.65 metric tonnes of relief supplies to the Namsang EAC headquarters. Operations saw 22, 26, 25, and 18 passengers evacuated in separate rotations. Relief materials were also flown into the region.
Land subsidence continues to batter towns. In Longleng, five families from Shamkang Ward and three from High School Ward fled their homes. Two houses were washed away, and another is structurally unsafe. Tuensang reports 49 families evacuated since July 19. Land near the District Transport Office is sinking at an estimated rate of six to eight inches per day. PWD crews are filling cracks along NH-202 to keep the road viable.
Mon district officials have reached 360 families in nine wards with relief supplies. Another 200 families in Naginimora received aid. Educational infrastructure is taking a hit. A middle school in Mon and a Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya in Wakching sustained heavy damage. Mokokchung is sheltering 19 displaced people at a Tuli town hall relief camp. The district deployed water tankers and activated mobile medical units to handle health screenings.
The Nagaland government issued a strict circular Tuesday regarding private donations. All NGOs, church groups, and individuals must route aid through District Disaster Management Authorities. This move aims to prevent duplication and ensure fair distribution. The NSDMA stated, "All relief and rescue operations at the district level would be coordinated only through the respective DDMAs." Officials released contact details for all 17 districts to manage the flow of cash and goods.
