Nagaland Activates Emergency Helpdesks as Monsoon Disaster Toll Climbs

Kohima: Nagaland is reeling from severe weather as landslides and flash floods destroy homes and cut off transport networks. The state government activated emergency helpdesks on July 22 to coordinate relief efforts for homeless families. Sentiwapang Aier, secretary to the government, confirmed the urgent need for shelter and assistance. Disaster struck Mon district on the night of July 19. The Nagaland Gaonburas Federation (NGBF) reported nine fatalities and several injuries, with Mon suffering the worst devastation. Landslides destroyed numerous houses and left thousands without shelter. Damaged electricity, water, and communication lines have isolated many communities. Tuensang district also reported extensive destruction. Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio visited the impact zones to monitor operations.

Kuki Inpi Nagaland (KIN) and Yimkhiung Akherü Arihako (YAA) extended condolences to the victims. KIN expressed concern over agricultural and infrastructure damage in Tuli, Mokokchung district. YAA urged the state to prioritize prompt rehabilitation and service restoration. The Naga Students' Federation (NSF) called for equitable relief distribution and long-term aid for lost property, crops, and livestock.

The NSF stated, "The federation also called for long-term rehabilitation, including restoration of damaged roads, bridges, electricity, water supply and communication networks."

Community groups and churches are currently assisting the NSDMA, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and security forces. The NSF further advised the state to invest in scientific landslide mitigation, hazard mapping, and slope stabilization to improve disaster preparedness. Officials encourage citizens to remain alert and follow all safety advisories as the monsoon continues.
