Kohima: Mokokchung district is reeling from severe floods and landslides triggered by heavy rain and thunderstorms between July 18 and July 19. The deluge cut off vital road, power, and telecommunication networks, hitting the Tuli sub-division hardest. Residents fled low-lying homes as mud and floodwater swamped the area. Roads, water supplies, and electricity grids took heavy hits.
The District Disaster Management Authority launched immediate relief operations. They evacuated displaced families and opened emergency camps. Crews used water tankers to clear debris and supply fresh drinking water. Officials report that telecom services are now back up, though teams continue to monitor the lines for stability. Medical staff set up camps and dispatched essential supplies to stop potential disease outbreaks.
NH-2 remains the biggest headache. Landslides destroyed sections between Chuchuyimlang and Unger, and a massive stretch between Tuli and Tzudikong. Inter-state travel on this highway is dead. The PWD and other agencies are working around the clock to patch up the road. Traffic now flows exclusively through NH-702D, which connects Mokokchung to Mariani. Officials have placed tight restrictions on this route to keep supplies moving.
MLA and Advisor A Pangjung Jamir surveyed the wreckage in Tuli and Tzudikong this past Saturday. Accompanied by ward councillors and BJP 21 Tuli Mandal workers, he handed out emergency funds to displaced families. Jamir spent the day talking with victims, offering his support for the long road to recovery. The BJP stated it "stands in solidarity with all affected families" while praying for their safety and strength.
