Nagaland centralizes disaster relief after floods and landslides

Kohima: The Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority ordered all rescue and aid operations to go through district offices. Friday's notification applies to NGOs, church groups, and civil organizations. It aims to stop duplication and ensure fairness. The state faces heavy rain, landslides, and flash floods.

Relief providers must now clear all cash or goods through the office of the District Disaster Management Authority chairman. "The move is aimed at ensuring the smooth, equitable and accountable distribution of relief materials," the agency stated. Authorities expect full compliance from all well-wishers.

Longleng officials moved fast. The district administration, Phomla Hoichem, and the Phom Students’ Conference handed out rations and cash on Thursday. They targeted Alayung, Yaongyimchen, Yachem, and Noksosang villages. These areas suffered damage from ground subsidence and landslides starting July 19. Fifty-five households across these four villages need help after their homes became unsafe.
