Federal Team Pledges Aid After Nagaland Flood Crisis

Kohima: A federal team led by Joint Secretary M Ramachandrudu toured Nagaland this week to assess widespread destruction. The Inter-Ministerial Central Team checked disaster sites in Mon, Mokokchung, and Longleng districts. Heavy rains on July 19 and 20 triggered landslides and floods across the region.

Roads vanished. Bridges collapsed. Connectivity to remote villages remains broken. In Mon, the team visited Defence Colony and Thamnan Ward on August 13. They met with local administration and representatives from the Konyak Union, Konyak Students Union, and Konyak Nyupuh Sheko Khong. Monsoon disasters destroyed homes and farmland while killing residents.

The team inspected the Tuli Sub-Division in Mokokchung on August 12. Nodal Officer Temsuwangshi Jamir briefed them at Tuliyong Community Hall. Longleng faced a total cutoff from the rest of the state. The breakdown of surface transport paralyzed the delivery of relief goods and emergency medical services. Joint CEO Dr Jhonny Ruangmei noted that the lack of access served as a "multiplier of disaster" for local relief efforts.

Indian Air Force helicopters spent weeks evacuating over 100 people, including students and the sick, from Longleng, Tamlu, and Namsang. Advisors Z Nyusietho Nyuthe and A Panjung Jamir joined the federal officials to oversee the ground situation. Ramachandrudu promised state officials that the center will prioritize the restoration process. The delegation also distributed aid to three fire-hit families in Yaongyemchen village.

Deputy Chief Minister Yanthungo Patton surveyed the wreckage in Mon on Friday, inspecting sites at Defence Colony, Thamnan Ward, and Techa Ward. Accompanied by several MLAs and top police brass, Patton promised that the state would leverage verification reports from local officials and civil society groups to lobby the center for swift restoration funding. He cautioned residents to ignore unverified social media rumors regarding relief efforts.

Patton specifically credited the local administration, police, and volunteers from the Konyak Union, Konyak Students Union, and Konyak Nyupuh Sheko Khong for their rescue work during the crisis. The Mon Deputy Commissioner provided the briefing team with video documentation of the destruction.

Beyond immediate repairs, officials are rethinking the state's construction standards. Joint CEO Dr. Jhonny Ruangmei raised the need for future-ready, resilient infrastructure, questioning whether current building practices can withstand the intensity of future monsoons. NSDMA Advisor Z Nyusietho Nyuthe also confirmed that both state and federal authorities are now actively planning precautionary measures to mitigate future disaster risks.
