Kohima: Torrential rain and thunderstorms walloped Mokokchung district between July 18 and 19. The resulting floods, mudslides, and landslides destroyed infrastructure across the region. Tuli sub-division took the hardest hit. Residents fled low-lying areas as water rose. The District Disaster Management Authority launched immediate relief operations, opening camps and handing out supplies to displaced families.
Road links are in shambles. Massive landslides cut off National Highway-2, which links Mokokchung to Amguri via Tuli. The damage between Chuchuyimlang and Unger, along with the stretch between Tuli town and Tzudikong, killed inter-state transit. Ground links to Mon and Longleng districts also shut down. NH-702D is now the only functional road for essential goods. Authorities placed strict traffic controls on the route to prevent gridlock. Teams from NHIDCL and PWD are busy clearing the Changtongya-Longleng and Merangkong-Tamlu highways. Villages like Salulamang and Yajang C are currently isolated.
Utilities took a beating. Power lines feeding the Chuchuyimlang Administrative Circle collapsed. Water supply pipes in Tuli snapped. The Power Department and PHED are on the job. Telecom services failed but are now back up and under observation.
Health officials acted fast. They set up medical camps and activated mobile units stocked with medicines from Mokokchung headquarters to stop disease outbreaks. Workers are running awareness campaigns to keep people safe. DC Ajit Kumar Verma appointed Area Administrative Officers as Incident Commanders to manage the chaos. The District Emergency Operation Centre is fully active.
The state government provided crucial financial backing. "The DDMA, in coordination with the Public Works Department (National Highways) and other stakeholders, is undertaking restoration work and repairing alternative routes to restore connectivity at the earliest," according to the administration. The Chief Minister released 36 lakh rupees from the State Disaster Response Fund to bankroll the relief effort.
