Kohima: Persistent, heavy rainfall is hammering Nagaland, triggering dangerous landslides and widespread infrastructure damage. Roads, homes, and power grids are failing under the deluge. District disaster authorities have issued urgent public advisories.
Wokha district took a hard hit. A landslide at PWD Colony on Sunday morning left a new house teetering on the edge of collapse after the foundation wall washed away. At Forest Colony, three homes were ruined. Four more households in Lakhuti village sustained damage, with two pigs buried in the debris. Englan village remains dark after a July 4 lightning strike destroyed their transformer. Power supply in Chukitong and Akuk village is also down due to fallen trees and debris. A Power Department official explained the delay in repairs: "Restoration was being carried out in phases as repairing transformers was a time-consuming process."
Shamator remains severed from key routes. Heavy mudslides have blocked the main road and the Chessore to Agunto road, while the town pipeline is broken. Paddy fields in Y. Anner village were lost to the slide. In Naginimora, the Dikhu Bridge is at high risk of collapse, forcing officials to ban all foot and vehicle traffic across the span.
Peren Town reported a major road blockage at Beilikui Ward. Authorities there are warning residents to stay clear of steep slopes and embankments while clearing operations grind on. Across the state, Deputy Commissioners in Kohima, Dimapur, Tseminyu, Kiphire, Tuensang, and Mon have ordered residents to avoid flooded areas and unnecessary travel. Tseminyu specifically prohibited swimming or fishing in swollen rivers.
Statewide, citizens are urged to keep emergency kits ready and monitor local conditions. Emergency contact lines for the State Emergency Operation Centre are 1070 and 112.
