Gangtok: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh visited forward areas in Sikkim on November 8 to celebrate Diwali with soldiers of the Trishakti Corps. He spent the day at Sherathang, near the India-China border, where he met with troops stationed in high-altitude conditions. Soldiers stood ready. Singh praised their vigilance and high morale during his address.
He arrived alongside Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi, General Dhiraj Seth, Lt Gen VMB Krishnan, and Lt Gen Man Raj Singh Mann. Singh laid a wreath at the Sherathang War Memorial. He noted that the fallen soldiers there hailed from states including Nagaland, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, and Assam. This diversity reflects national unity.
The Minister distributed sweets and gifts among the personnel. He reminded them that their service allows citizens to celebrate safely at home. Soldiers sacrifice family time for the country. Singh also visited the nearby Baba Harbhajan Singh Mandir to pay his respects. He told the troops, "Your service to the nation will never be forgotten. Every generation of Indians will remember your sacrifice."
Singh connected the local site to the National War Memorial in New Delhi, which holds 26,000 names of the fallen. He pushed the soldiers to maintain discipline and build strong ties with local residents. Their conduct shapes public perception of the military. He also reached out to the families of soldiers who died in the line of duty. "India stands with you for the contribution you have made," he said.
