Illegal Buffalo Smuggling Rife in Meghalaya's East Garo Hills

Shillong: Premiar N. Sangma of Dobu Songmong wants police action against an illegal buffalo smuggling ring. He filed a formal complaint at the Williamnagar Police Station. It details a months-long operation moving livestock through East Garo Hills. Trucks travel the Jengjal-Samanda-Chisobibra-Williamnagar-Songsak route at night. Sangma claims vehicles like AS178788 move without permits, health certificates, or transit papers.

The animals suffer. Drivers cram 15 to 20 buffaloes into pickup vans. The beasts are tied tight without food, water, or rest. Sangma says: "Photographs and video recordings had been submitted to the authorities as supporting evidence." The complainant fears these animals are destined for illegal slaughter or the Bangladesh border. He also cites risks of infectious diseases like Foot and Mouth Disease spreading among local herds.

Local farmers could be losing money. Sangma alleges some buffaloes are stolen or bought at suspicious, rock-bottom prices. He demands authorities enforce the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, the Transport of Animals Rules, and the Motor Vehicles Act. He wants regular night checks and veterinary checkpoints on National Highway 62.

Police need to seize non-compliant vehicles. The complaint reached the Superintendent of Police, East Garo Hills, and the District Veterinary and Transport Officers. Sangma wants a full investigation into the owners, drivers, and suppliers running this network.
