Shillong: Meghalaya Police filed a suo motu FIR after a pig was allegedly skinned alive at a Tura meat shop. The animal was reportedly doused in boiling water before being skinned. Araimile police station opened the case on Friday following a complaint from PETA India. The organization flagged a viral video showing three individuals committing the act while a fourth person filmed the scene.
Police registered the charges under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023. The West Garo Hills Superintendent of Police ordered the action after reviewing the graphic footage. Officials confirmed the shop operated without a valid license. The Assistant Commissioner of Food Safety for West Garo Hills issued a formal notice to the shop owner regarding these sanitation and legal violations.
PETA India representatives stated, "Taking note of the seriousness of the allegations, the West Garo Hills Superintendent of Police directed Araimile police station to register the suo motu case." The advocacy group is now pushing the Meghalaya Food Safety Department to shutter the business for good. Detectives continue to build their case as the investigation remains active.
