Shillong: Over 150 residents packed into Balonggre on Saturday to push back against mandatory Aadhaar requirements. The Constitutional Rights Forum led the charge, hosting a public meeting to take a stand against privacy threats and service denials. Citizens report being cut off from schools, hospitals, and government welfare programs because they lack an Aadhaar card.
CRF leaders Greneth M. Sangma and S. Ch. Sangma addressed the crowd regarding the legal fallout of these mandates. They cited the Supreme Court’s rulings on the right to privacy as a primary shield. The forum adopted four firm resolutions to fight back against orders that lack legal backing. Greneth M. Sangma stated, "The meeting unanimously resolved to oppose blanket Aadhaar mandates that lack legal backing or contradict binding judicial orders."
The group is now preparing a multi-pronged legal strategy. They plan to fire off formal notices to the Chief Secretary, Deputy Commissioners, and heads of relevant departments. These notices demand an immediate withdrawal of any administrative instructions that violate standing court directives. If officials ignore the law, the CRF will launch contempt proceedings.
Organizers are currently building a case file with official records and evidence to support their upcoming battle. Beyond the courtroom, the forum is organizing a peaceful protest rally in Tura this November. While the specific date and venue remain under wraps, the group insists they are not trying to break public services. They only want to ensure government programs follow the law.
