Mizoram Officials Alert Residents as Heavy Rains Wreck Roads and Water Infrastructure

Aizawl: Mizoram Disaster Management and Rehabilitation Minister Lalnilawma issued a call for statewide alertness on September 9 as relentless rainfall shredded road connectivity and triggered widespread landslides. The minister deployed Zonal Officers to assist impacted areas while local disaster management committees now operate under the direct oversight of deputy commissioners.

Rainfall totals varied wildly across the state in the 24 hours ending Wednesday. Mamit took the brunt of the storm with 54 mm, followed by Aizawl at 46.4 mm, Khawzawl at 28.5 mm, Lunglei at 26.2 mm, Siaha at 24.5 mm, Lawngtlai at 23.5 mm, Kolasib at 23 mm, Serchhip at 19.5 mm, Saitual at 17.5 mm, Hnahthial at 15.5 mm, and Champhai at 4.5 mm.

Infrastructure took a direct hit. The Greater Aizawl Water Supply Scheme Phase III is offline after a landslide blocked pumping capabilities, while gravity-fed water from the Setlak area failed due to construction earthwork on the Aizawl Western Bypass Road. Lalnilawma warned Aizawl residents to prep for severe water shortages.

Officials want locals to use the government-built Khuarel App to report road blocks or emergencies. Regarding the quick response system, the minister stated, "Zonal Officers and Deputy Commissioners will be able to receive the reports immediately and take prompt decisions on the necessary action."
