Kohima: Persistent rainfall triggered a string of landslides across Wokha district on August 7, damaging property and snapping vital road links. An old kutcha house located at Etsutchukha Colony along NH-2 took the brunt of a mudslide at approximately 3:50 am. The home belongs to Wochamo Ngullie. Fortunately, the family was away on summer vacation, sparing them from harm. No casualties occurred.
A vehicle parked nearby also lost its grip on the slick ground during the deluge. Local volunteers swarmed the site to drag the vehicle to safety before it could strike the house. Nongothung Ngullie, a local resident, noted the timing of the collapse. The district administration later arrived on the scene to inspect the damage and gauge the ongoing safety risks.
Rain-driven destruction spread beyond the town limits. Heavy mudslides slammed into Elumyo and Humtso villages on Friday. These slides completely blocked the road to Elumyo, leaving the village cut off from the district headquarters. "The disruption has particularly raised concerns over access to medical care and the movement of essential commodities," officials stated. Authorities are now warning residents in vulnerable zones to stay alert as the monsoon continues to soak the region.
