Kohima: A mudslide tore through Etsutchukha Colony in Wokha town early August 7. The slide smashed into an old kutcha house owned by Wochamo Ngullie. The property sits along NH-2. Fortunately, the family was away on summer vacation during the disaster. The house survived, but barely.
Resident Nongothung Ngullie said the mudslide occurred at around 3:50 am. Heavy rain also caused a parked car to lose its grip and slide toward the home. Local volunteers rushed to the scene to pull the vehicle to safety. Nobody was hurt.
Wokha district administration officials arrived later to inspect the damage. They assessed the site and checked for further safety risks. Meanwhile, the weather caused chaos elsewhere in the region.
Heavy rain on Thursday night triggered multiple mudslides near Elumyo and Humtso villages by Friday. Debris completely blocked the road to Elumyo. The village now sits cut off from the district headquarters. Residents fear the blockage will stop medical care and delivery of essential commodities. Officials warned people to stay alert, noting, "Residents in the affected areas have been urged to remain cautious as rainfall continues, particularly around vulnerable and landslide-prone stretches."
