Kohima: Corporate Social Responsibility spending in Nagaland hit a record Rs 26.79 crore during the 2024-25 financial year. This figure nearly doubled from the previous year's total of Rs 15.41 crore. Data provided by Union Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to the Lok Sabha shows a steady climb from Rs 3.57 crore in FY2020-21. Forty-four companies participated in the state during the most recent fiscal period.
Health-related projects received the largest portion of these funds, totaling Rs 14.28 crore. Education and livelihood programs drew Rs 6.20 crore, while rural development projects secured Rs 4.79 crore. Environmental and animal welfare initiatives received Rs 1.24 crore. Sports promotion, gender equality, and elderly care programs received smaller portions of the total investment.
Mon district led the state in funding with Rs 6.56 crore. Kohima followed with Rs 5.51 crore, and Dimapur saw Rs 5.17 crore. Other districts received significantly less, with Longleng bringing in only Rs 0.20 crore. Indian Oil Corporation Ltd topped the list of contributors with Rs 4.89 crore, while HDFC Bank Ltd provided Rs 4.34 crore. Tata AIG General Insurance Company Ltd added Rs 2.75 crore. Sitharaman noted that the 2022 Nagaland CSR Conclave served as a major catalyst for this growth. She stated, "The 2022 Nagaland CSR Conclave proved to be a turning point, with many companies, including some without manufacturing units or service centres in the State, being persuaded to participate in CSR initiatives and consider Nagaland as a destination for meaningful interventions."
Despite this gain, Nagaland remains a low recipient compared to national standards. Total CSR spending across India reached Rs 40,794 crore in FY2024-25. Within the Northeast, Assam dominated with Rs 607.04 crore. Nagaland ranked sixth among the eight northeastern states, placing ahead of only Tripura and Mizoram.
State infrastructure faces immediate weather challenges. The India Meteorological Department warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall across the Northeast for the next two days. Isolated heavy rain will persist for five subsequent days. The department expects widespread rain across Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura from August 5 through August 10. Thunderstorms and lightning will likely strike these same areas between August 5 and August 8. The Meteorological Centre in Kohima specifically forecasts heavy to very heavy rainfall for Kohima on August 5. Mon, Longleng, Peren, and Wokha should prepare for heavy rainfall of 7 to 11 centimeters within a 24-hour period on August 5.
