Kohima: Advisor for Agriculture Mhathung Yanthan took the floor at the 97th Annual General Meeting of the ICAR Society in New Delhi this Wednesday. Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan chaired the session, which drew ministers from across the country to discuss the future of the sector.

Yanthan made his case for the North East. He pressed for the creation of a National or Regional Institute for Hill Agriculture and Climate Resilient Farming, pinpointing Nagaland as the ideal site. He also pushed for new colleges focused on horticulture, fisheries, natural farming, and food technology to operate under the Central Agricultural University framework.

He demanded better resources for the state's existing agricultural network. This includes bolstering the recruitment and infrastructure for all 11 Krishi Vigyan Kendras, specifically mentioning the ICAR Nagaland Centre at Medziphema. He urged officials to stop dragging their feet on new facilities. Yanthan noted, "Yanthan further appealed to ICAR to accord greater institutional priority to Nagaland’s farmers, youth and immense agricultural potential, keeping in view the unique needs of hill agriculture."

The push for growth does not stop at current district borders. The advisor also called for the immediate setup of additional Krishi Vigyan Kendras to serve the needs of Nagaland's recently created districts.
