Kohima: Nagaland Chief Minister Dr. Neiphiu Rio announced the approval of the Nagaland Agriculture Policy 2025 during the 80th Independence Day ceremony at the Kohima Civil Secretariat Plaza. The state aims to overhaul the rural economy and stabilize food security. "The Policy sets a clear vision for building a resilient, sustainable and prosperous agricultural economy that enhances farmers livelihoods, strengthens food and nutrition security and promote climate- resilient growth," Rio stated.
The government is backing this shift with the Unified Digital Agriculture Ecosystem, a new tool built under the Digital Agriculture Mission. Horticulture growth is moving fast too. The Department of Horticulture expanded fruit, vegetable, spice, and flower coverage by 2,800 hectares. Officials are now processing plans for two new Centres of Excellence, one for Kiwi fruit in Pfutsero and another for Dendrobium orchids in Chumoukedima.
Meat and fish production numbers are climbing. Local producers, working with the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services, yielded 1,600 tonnes of pork and goat meat. On July 14, 2026, the state signed a deal with the French firm Cooperi to upgrade piggery breeding. Fish production surged from 9,151.50 MT to 11,158.9 MT, driven by the PMMSY program.
Coffee production is getting a major upgrade as well. On May 18, 2026, the state launched a 175 crore rupee project for Arabica coffee in Tuophema and Robusta coffee in Ghotovi. This plan includes building high-tech nurseries, roasteries, and a marketing push to sell Nagaland coffee as a premium brand.
