Kohima: Krishi Vigyan Kendra Kohima handed out new farm tools to 46 progressive farmers this week. The event took place at the KVK campus to help growers from Kohima and Tseminyu districts. ATARI Zone VII organized the session with funding from the ICAR Indian Agricultural Research Institute NEH Programme in New Delhi.
Dr. Ruokuovilie Mezhatsu, the principal scientist and head of KVK Kohima, spoke to the crowd about the reliance on paddy. He noted that rural households depend on home-grown rice. "The introduction of ergonomic tools and light farm machinery would help reduce farm drudgery, particularly for women farmers, while improving overall productivity."
Technical Officer Dr. Sesenlo Kath demonstrated how to use manual paddy threshers and wheel hand hoes. The threshers strip grains from stalks without the grain breakage caused by traditional beating. These tools also prevent weather damage by speeding up the harvest process.
The wheel hand hoes let farmers work while standing, which cuts down on back pain. These implements aerate soil and clear weeds between crop rows. Officials handed out 30 paddy threshers, 30 wheel hand hoes, and various Rabi vegetable seed kits to the attendees.
