Kohima: Nagaland Governor Nand Kishore Yadav gathered department heads at Lok Bhavan on July 28 to scrutinize the state's agriculture sector. He wants better livelihoods for farmers. Productivity must rise through sustainable practices, improved irrigation, and smarter mechanization.
Agriculture sustains most of the state. Nearly 70 percent of the population relies on the land. Women drive this engine, making up 65 percent of the total agricultural workforce. Officials briefed the Governor on production targets and cropping intensity while laying out a list of active initiatives.
The review covered a deep bench of programs. These include the Krishonnati Yojana, PM-Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana, National Food Security and Nutrition Mission, and the National Mission on Edible Oils. The department also reported on the Mission Organic Value Chain Development for North Eastern Region, National Mission on Natural Farming, PM-Kisan, and the Sub-Mission on Agricultural Mechanisation. Further efforts involve the Per Drop More Crop initiative, Rainfed Area Development, and Agroforestry.
Work continues on oil palm cultivation and water harvesting infrastructure. Training and market linkages remain priorities. However, terrain and logistics bite back. Fragmented landholdings, bad roads, and thin infrastructure hinder real progress. The Governor urged the team to step up. He said officials must "adopt innovative approaches, strengthen convergence among stakeholders and work towards making agriculture more productive, resilient and market-oriented."
