Kohima: Experts converged on the Model Demonstration Farm in Pughoboto on October 2. They hosted a field-based learning session for 40 local growers. The Farmers' Cell and the All India Coordinated Research Projects at the School of Agricultural Sciences, Nagaland University, led the event. This gathering stemmed from a March 2026 meeting between the Sub-Divisional Planning and Development Board and university staff. Village leaders from Mishilimi, Lazami, Natsumi, and Pughoboto joined the local farmers to observe the new techniques.
Yithachu Thur, SDO Civil, urged the attendees to apply the technical advice provided by the researchers. Dr. Mary N. Odyuo managed the team and outlined the day's goals. She reminded the group that farming is a complex mix of disciplines. She told the farmers: "Agriculture as a field combining science, art and business."
Scientists detailed specific crop improvements during the session. Dr. Virosanuo Solo introduced linseed, noting its potential for both food and floriculture. Dr. Pezangulie Chakruno reviewed soybean production, citing research on 400 germplasm lines. Dr. Rokozeno discussed pulses, including the introduction of pigeon pea to boost soil health and protein intake. Dr. Debika Nongmaithem gave a hands-on lesson on treating sesame seeds with biofertilizer and jaggery solution. Experts also covered vegetable nursery management and Integrated Pest Management strategies to help growers identify harmful insects. The participants showed clear interest in adopting these new methods to improve their local harvests.
