Kohima: Nagaland Governor Nand Kishore Yadav demanded better results from state agricultural programs during a review meeting at Lok Bhavan in Kohima on July 28. He wants more productive, resilient, and market-oriented farming. The state needs results.
The Department of Agriculture presented its current progress, organizational structure, and future goals. Nearly 70 percent of the state population relies on agriculture. Women make up 65 percent of that workforce. Officials emphasized their efforts to boost productivity, improve irrigation, and increase farmer income through various state and central initiatives.
The department is currently managing a broad slate of programs. This list includes the Krishonnati Yojana, PM-Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana, National Food Security and Nutrition Mission, National Mission on Edible Oils, and the Mission Organic Value Chain Development for North Eastern Region. Other active programs include the National Mission on Natural Farming, PM-Kisan, Sub-Mission on Agricultural Mechanisation, Per Drop More Crop, Rainfed Area Development, and Agroforestry.
Staff detailed ongoing work to expand oil palm cultivation and promote organic farming. They are also building water harvesting infrastructure and creating better market linkages for local produce. Success remains difficult. The Governor heard that fragmented landholdings, poor road connectivity, and difficult terrain continue to block progress.
Governor Yadav urged officials to use innovative approaches and improve coordination between stakeholders. He stated, "Adopt innovative approaches, strengthen convergence among stakeholders and work towards making agriculture more productive, resilient and market-oriented." The department must now focus on these objectives to improve the livelihoods of farmers across the state.
