Imphal: Ukhrul MLA Ram Muivah is demanding immediate action from the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited to repair the failing 100-km stretch of National Highway 202 between Yaingangpokpi and Lunghar. Muivah toured the route on September 23 and 24, visiting Mahadev, Hungpung, Langdang, Shirui, and Lunghar. He brought NHIDCL engineers along for the ride.
The legislator found no workers on-site. He discovered sinking zones and fresh landslides blocking the road. Muivah wrote to NHIDCL Executive Director Sandosh Rai to flag the situation. He labeled the highway condition as "terrible" in his official report. The contractor, Ganapati of Rajasthan, reportedly wants to walk away from the project entirely.
The project faces two massive hurdles. First, the contractor wants a foreclosure. Second, land disputes persist near Lunghar. The village authority claims 11.5 km of its 14-km stretch is clear, but a 3.5-km bypass zone remains stuck. Local leaders now accept the fourth alignment option from the recent survey. Landowners agreed to compensation terms following the 2024 Joint Physical Measurement by the Revenue Department.
Muivah expects the Deputy Commissioner of Ukhrul to release overdue compensation funds to clear the path forward. He insists that NHIDCL must break the deadlock to save this vital transport artery for the interior hill districts of Ukhrul and Kamjong.
