Kohima: The Chakhroma Youth Organisation banned all unauthorized riverbed mining, dredging, and extraction in the Chakhroma jurisdiction. The order covers every river, stream, and water body in the area. Officials intend to enforce strict penalties for any violators. This includes the seizure of heavy machinery and transport vehicles.
This crackdown follows a November 5 statement from the group. They act in line with a unanimous joint resolution from the Chakhroma Public Organisation passed on October 31, 2025. This decision involved all local Village Councils. It also aligns with an executive regulatory order issued by the Deputy Commissioner of Chumoukedima on November 3, 2025.
Illegal operations persist despite clear directives and district monitoring. Contractors and machinery operators ignore the rules. These activities dump silt into the water. The group is particularly worried about mountain rocks being washed directly in streams. This ruins drinking water, kills aquatic life, and poisons irrigation channels. The organisation stated: "The washing of mountain-extracted rocks and boulders in any river or stream within Chakhroma jurisdiction has been strictly prohibited with immediate effect."
The CYO issued a final warning to all contractors and drivers. Operations must stop now. Local village monitoring groups are now on alert. They are ordered to watch their territories and report any violations to the CYO immediately.
