Kohima: The Medziphema Circle Chakhroma Public Organization (MCCPO) issued a stern directive on October 6. Village councils, contractors, railway firms, and operators must immediately stop illegal riverbed extraction. The order reinforces a November 1, 2025, mandate from the Deputy Commissioner of Chumoukedima. This policy bans heavy machinery use for harvesting sand, gravel, and boulders.
Unchecked mining triggers massive ecological damage. It destroys aquatic habitats and drains groundwater. The practice also ruins infrastructure, including roads, bridges, and railway assets. Such activities leave the region prone to floods, landslides, and toxic water contamination. MCCPO demands total compliance with government environmental standards.
Landowners must verify all government permits before allowing any excavation on their property. The organization promised swift retaliation for any future breaches. "Violators caught engaging in unauthorised extraction or water pollution will face the seizure of machinery, vehicles, and equipment, alongside legal prosecution." MCCPO officials pledged to work directly with state departments to safeguard natural resources throughout the Medziphema Circle.
