Shillong: Garo Hills teachers are staying on the streets. The Garo Hills Deficit School Teachers’ and Employees’ Association decided to extend their protest during their 33rd annual conference at the Williamnagar District Auditorium on October 30. They claim the state government ignored repeated pleas regarding a list of long-standing demands.
The administration missed an October 9 deadline. They also broke promises to pay a 51 per cent Dearness Allowance before the Puja break. Members of the association now want the immediate release of a revised 53 per cent Dearness Allowance for all teaching and non-teaching staff at deficit schools. The delay forces these workers to live with financial hardship, creating a pay gap between them and other government employees.
Vacancies are piling up. The association demands the government fill every sanctioned position in these deficit schools immediately. Long-term staffing shortages crippled the daily operations of these institutions. The GHDSTEA insists they will press forward with their fight to get results. The group stated that they would "proceed with its democratic agitation to draw the government’s attention to these issues." Association leaders will send specific dates and protest instructions to local units soon.
