Shillong: Members of the Meghalaya Vocational Education Trainers Union staged a protest at IGP Point this Wednesday. This marks their second demonstration demanding revised pay, job security, and the removal of private Vocational Training Partners. They want these private agencies out of the state education program entirely.
Roughly 321 vocational teachers work across the state. Secondary teachers with three years of experience pull in Rs 24,000 monthly. Educators for Classes IX through XII earn Rs 30,000. The union wants these contractual roles regularized, pointing to better arrangements in other states. They argue vocational subjects have become a standard part of the school curriculum.
MVETU president Aiban Suchiang claims Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma promised a meeting to discuss these issues, but the government has gone silent. "Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma had previously assured the union of a meeting to discuss their grievances, but no communication has been received from the Chief Minister’s Office since then," Suchiang said.
The union issued a one-month ultimatum for the state to act. If the government ignores them, the executive committee will regroup to plan their next move.
