Minister Defends Shillong Pipeline Leaks as Routine Testing

Shillong: Shillong faces frequent water pipe bursts. Public Health Engineering Minister Marcuise N Marak blames the trouble on routine testing for the Greater Shillong Water Supply Scheme. He says the leaks do not signal a deep technical failure.

Workers already fixed the recent pipe failure in the Mawpat area. Marak claims these small bursts remain a standard part of the testing cycle. While residents worry about poor workmanship, the Minister insists the process is under control.

Construction creates chaos. People complain about contractors digging up fresh blacktopped roads to drop in new pipes. The PHE Department coordinates with the Public Works Department, but Shillong lacks underground utility ducts. This makes excavation unavoidable for ongoing infrastructure work.

The state aims to finish the remaining distribution network for GSWSS Phase III soon. Marak stated, "The department is currently laying the distribution pipelines and has been instructed to wrap up the work by March 2027." He promises the government will hit that deadline next year.
