Shillong: PHE Minister Marcuise N Marak officially kicked off the Water Connection to Non-Municipal Areas initiative on September 26. He announced the plan during a review session in Shillong. The project pushes for household tap water connections in settlements currently sitting outside existing municipal reach.
The move specifically targets areas across the Khasi Hills, Jaintia Hills, and Ri-Bhoi. Officials from the Public Health Engineering Department gathered to hash out the details. Attendees included the Commissioner and Secretary along with the Chief Engineer and a team of senior staff.
They spent the session tracking the progress of the Jal Jeevan Mission and the Nal Jal Mitra program. They want better management of rural water systems. The department aims to bridge gaps in current coverage, ensuring reliable water hits every home. As Minister Marak stated during the meeting, the initiative is "aimed at extending reliable household water connections to settlements that are not covered by existing municipal water supply networks."
This push falls under the wider Jal Jeevan Mission framework. The state is betting on this expansion to fix long-standing supply issues. Future efforts will focus on sustaining these new lines long-term.
