Guwahati: Assam police stopped a smuggling operation near Kaliabor after a truck driver blew past a checkpoint. Officers from the Kaliabor Police Outpost tried to flag down the truck, but the driver ignored them. The vehicle sped toward Shivsthan, forcing police to chase the suspect along National Highways 715 and 127.
Cops finally boxed in the truck at Shivsthan. They seized the vehicle, bearing registration number AS 02 CC 7019. Inside a hidden compartment, police found 30 head of cattle. One animal was dead. The survivors were moved to a Nagaon cowshed. Officers took the driver, Nur Mahmud, into custody.
Mahmud lives in Borma Bil, under the Samaguri Police Outpost. Authorities hauled him and the seized truck back to the Koliyabor Police Outpost. Investigators believe the cattle were headed from Upper Assam to Bangladesh. Police have linked Ijazul Haque and Mustafa Ahmed to the smuggling ring. Both men are residents of the Samaguri area. An officer stated, "The operation was launched after a truck allegedly ignored police instructions to stop at the Kaliabor Police Outpost in Kuwaritol and sped away towards Shivsthan."
