Guwahati: Assam is building a 534 crore wildlife safari and rescue centre in Dibrugarh. Forest and Climate Change Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah reviewed the plan on Sunday. The site covers 235 hectares inside the Namdang Reserved Forest. It sits 20 km from Dibrugarh town and 30 km from the airport.
The Assam Public Works Department will run the construction in two phases. The first phase costs 259 crore. It adds enclosures for tigers, rhinoceroses, leopards, and bears. This stage also brings a veterinary hospital and rescue facilities for animal treatment. The second phase carries a 275 crore price tag. It shifts focus to exotic animals and research.
Planners intend to house Asiatic lions, cheetahs, zebras, and hippos. The site will also feature an advanced research centre. Baruah claims the project will change the region. He stated, "The proposed facility would serve as a major wildlife conservation and rescue infrastructure while also supporting eco-tourism and generating employment opportunities in the region."
Officials expect the location to drive tourism in Upper Assam. The state government wants to expand animal care options. This facility aims to balance research with visitor access.
