Guwahati: Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary drew 35,371 visitors during the 2025-26 season. State minister Jayanta Mallabaruah confirmed the figures on Sunday, September 27, during World Tourism Day. The park sits in Assam's Morigaon district. It remains a top spot for spotting greater one-horned rhinoceroses.
The government now wants to fold local forest-fringe communities into the fold. Mallabaruah wants residents to find work in guiding and site interpretation. This plan ties tourism growth directly to habitat protection and local survival. "Pobitora is steadily emerging as an important nature-tourism destination, with 35,371 visitors in 2025-26," he said.
Officials are shifting the strategy. They want visitors to see more than just the wildlife. New experiences aim to teach people about the ecology of the region. "Our aim is simple: tourism must strengthen conservation, and conservation must create opportunities for our people," Mallabaruah stated.
