Guwahati: Deep cracks are tearing through houses and roads in Jharna Basti. Located in the Tinsukia district of Assam, the village sits under the Margherita co-district. The damage threatens around 100 families. Fear is growing. Residents say the fissures are widening every day, forcing many families to flee to safer ground.
Locals point their fingers at local coal dumping operations. They believe this activity triggered the instability. Margherita MLA Bhaskar Sharma arrived on Friday to inspect the damage. He brought along officials from the co-district administration and representatives from North Eastern Coalfields. The situation is dire.
Sharma promised a swift, professional response. He told those gathered, "The matter would be taken up seriously." The MLA committed to bringing in geological experts for a scientific assessment of the soil. This study should reveal the true cause of the cracks and show if more ground movement is coming. Families wait for answers. They need safety.
