Guwahati: Heavy rainfall hammered the Margherita subdivision in Assam’s Tinsukia district this week. Water surged into homes across several wards of the Margherita Municipal Board and parts of Ledo Colliery. Residents in Bidyanagar, Matikhad, and Itakhola felt the brunt of the chaos. Normal life ground to a halt.
Locals blame failing infrastructure. They point to narrow drains and a complete lack of adequate drainage systems. A light rain now triggers a flood. The situation has become a recurring nightmare for the neighborhood.
Roushan Thapa, in-charge of the Ledo Police Outpost, took charge of the crisis. He launched a rescue mission alongside the State Disaster Response Force. They pulled residents from rising water and moved them to safety. The team also handed out food and essential supplies to those displaced by the deluge.
The community is tired of the cycle. "Residents have demanded a permanent solution to the recurring waterlogging problem, including improved drainage facilities and the cleaning and reconstruction of existing drains and drainage channels." They want officials to fix the broken channels before the next storm hits.
