Guwahati: Two days of relentless rain turned streets into rivers across Tinsukia and Margherita. Entire neighborhoods are underwater. Public life stopped dead in its tracks. Water swallowed roads, houses, and shops throughout the region.
Affected areas in Tinsukia include Nakharai, No. 1 Balupara, Barguri, Jariguri, Kakratoli, Hengalguri, Tinsukia Police Station Chariali, Women's College, New Pukhuri, Ward No. 4, and Kochujan Tea Estate. In Margherita, floodwaters hit Ledo, Borgolai, and the town center. The deluge breached the Ledo Railway Station, local markets, and the Ledo College campus. Commuters and students remain stranded as traffic ground to a halt.
Locals point to failing infrastructure. They claim blocked drains and substandard culverts cause these floods even during moderate weather. Residents say this monsoon mess happens every year. They are sick of the silence from officials.
Kanchan Bora, Vice-President of the AJYCP Tinsukia district committee, slammed local leadership for the inaction. He stated, "Despite three consecutive terms as the MLA from Margherita, Bhaskar Sharma has failed to take effective measures to permanently address the issue of artificial flooding."
Bora also accused the Margherita Municipal Board of failing to clean sewer lines. People are now demanding the state government and district authorities overhaul the drainage network to stop the cycle of destruction. Previous protests yielded nothing. The town waits for a fix that never arrives.
