Guwahati: Assam’s Department of Legal Metrology raided the Digboi Charali Market on Wednesday morning. A nine-member team led by Inspector Debajit Bhattacharya arrived in three vehicles to check for illegal weighing tools. They caught seven vendors using equipment that failed to meet state standards. The inspectors seized all non-compliant gear.
This crackdown followed an August 27 NeNow report about faulty scales. Shoppers were allegedly getting shorted on fish, chicken, and mutton. Local leaders and social worker Nasir Neog had pressured the government to act. Neog claimed that "consumers were being cheated through improper weighing practices" and demanded an official intervention.
The department is now reviewing the seized items for signs of tampering. Violations of the Legal Metrology Act of 2009 could lead to heavy penalties under sections 24 and 33. The Digboi Charali Bazar Association previously asked the administration to tighten enforcement. Some traders fled the scene as the inspection heated up. Officials maintain that the seized tools remain subject to ongoing statutory proceedings.
