Guwahati: Two days of relentless rain drowned Tinsukia, Assam. Streets turned into rivers. The downpour paralyzed daily life, forcing residents to wade through deep water that swallowed homes and roads alike.
The deluge hit Nakharai, No. 1 Balupara, Barguri, Jariguri, Kakratoli, and Hengalguri. Major zones like Tinsukia Police Station Chariali, Women’s College, New Pukhuri, Ward No. 4, Kochujan Tea Estate, and Bordoloi Nagar reported severe waterlogging. Transportation ground to a halt as the water rose.
Locals pointed fingers at the town’s crumbling infrastructure. They argued that poor-quality drains and culverts cannot handle even moderate storms. Residents claimed that despite staging protests and sending repeated requests for help, the administration remains silent. One resident stated that "repeated representations and protest programmes seeking a permanent solution have yielded little response from the administration and the concerned departments."
This mess is an annual tradition. For the people living in the submerged districts, the current disaster highlights deep flaws in local civic management. They are now demanding the state government and district authorities overhaul the drainage network to prevent future flooding.
