Gangtok: Indian folk-horror film Bokshi hits theaters nationwide on October 9. The movie uses the forests and mountains of Sikkim as a primary character rather than a backdrop. It features the story of Anahita, a troubled teenager played by Prasanna Bisht. She goes on a school expedition and uncovers a connection between a mysterious site and an ancient legend involving the feared figure of Bokshi. Mansi Multani plays Shalini, a mysterious history teacher linked to the trek.
Director-producer Bhargav Saikia and writer-executive producer Harsh Vaibhav spent three years researching the region. The production team shot the film over 80 days across East and West Sikkim and around Gangtok. Local talent joins the cast, including Trishala Tamang, Biru Tamang, Avishek Lama, Prabhat Pakhrin, Bhasker Pradhan, and Yangnim Subba. Sikkim-based line producer Timoti Rai worked on the project for several years.
The film previously played at international festivals. Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap recently shared the trailer on Instagram. Saikia and Vaibhav specifically target audiences in Sikkim and the Darjeeling hills, where their years of travel shaped the script. Regarding the project, Saikia said, "Sikkim’s forests, mountains and folklore take centre stage in the newly released trailer of Bokshi."
