Sivasagar Embankment Faces Fresh Erosion Threat

Guwahati: The Betbari Barpatra Disang embankment in Assam is failing. Swollen river currents are carving away the levee in Sivasagar district. The erosion has already reached the paver blocks along the surface. This barrier protects Sivasagar town and its neighbors from catastrophe. Residents of Betbari have survived 13 days of constant flooding.

Fear is spreading. Locals worry the bank will collapse and trigger fresh inundation for nearby homes. The Water Resources Department launched emergency repair work on a war footing to stop the collapse. Local volunteers are working alongside officials to reinforce the vulnerable stretch. Police have deployed a large contingent to both sides of the embankment. They are there to keep order and keep the work zone clear.

Officials are watching the river closely. They are racing against time to fix the damage before the wall gives way. According to reports from the site, the current erosion is a "critical stretch of the Betbari Barpatra Disang embankment" that requires immediate intervention to avert a wider crisis.
