Guwahati: Torrential rain triggered flash flooding in Kaliabor, Assam, late Tuesday, September 22. Water surged down from the Karbi Hills, swamping residential zones in the Bhatabari area of Bamuni. Over 50 families now face the fallout of this deluge.
Homes took on knee-deep water. Residents scrambled for higher ground, forced to set up makeshift camps along roadsides as their property went under. The flood also ravaged local farmland and killed livestock, stripping many of their primary resources.
This is the worst flooding here in 15 years. Residents expressed the severity of the sudden crisis, noting that for many, "Residents said they were forced to move out of their homes and take shelter along roads and other elevated areas as the water level continued to rise."
Authorities are currently keeping a close watch on the rising water levels. The situation remains volatile as the community waits for the flow from the hills to subside.
